Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and how we look after it. We follow the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles.

If you have questions, email us at [email protected].

Who we are

The Disability Dialogue is a national project led by people with disability. It is run by Disability Advocacy Network Australia (DANA) Limited (ABN 53 136 792 884). In this policy, "we" means the Disability Dialogue and DANA.

The Social Deck (ABN 94 366 395 064) helps us run our events and this website. To do this, The Social Deck may see and handle personal information on our behalf. They must follow the same privacy law. You can read The Social Deck's privacy policy.

What information we collect

We only collect information we need. You can choose what you share with us.

When you join our mailing list, we collect your name and email address.

When you suggest a topic, we collect your name, email address and your idea.

When you tell us you want to be more involved, we collect your name, email address, the ways you want to be involved (such as speaking at events or joining a focus group) and any message you write.

When you register for an event, we collect your name and email address through Humanitix, our event booking service. We may also ask other questions, such as about your access needs or your connection to the disability community. This helps us understand our community and organise events that work for you. You can skip any question you do not want to answer.

When you email us, we collect your email address and anything you write.

When you join our online community, our community platform (Circle) collects the details you use to create your account and anything you post.

When you visit our website, our website host collects basic technical information, like your browser type and the pages you visit. This does not tell us who you are.

We also use Google Analytics to understand how people use our website, such as which pages are most popular. Google Analytics uses cookies (small files saved by your browser). It does not tell us your name or contact details. You can block cookies in your browser settings, or use the Google Analytics opt-out tool.

Information about your disability

Information about your health or disability is "sensitive information" under privacy law. We only collect it if you choose to give it to us. We only use it for the reason you gave it, like setting up access supports at an event. You never have to tell us about your disability to take part.

How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • send you news about our events, projects and ideas, if you joined our mailing list
  • run events, including making sure they are accessible for you
  • reply to your emails, suggestions and offers to get involved
  • invite you to take part in projects, working groups or focus groups, if you asked to be involved
  • improve our website and events.

We will not use your information for anything else unless you agree, or the law says we must.

We will never sell your information.

Stopping our emails

Every email we send has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. You can also email us and ask to be taken off the list.

Event recordings

We record some of our online events and share the recordings on our website and YouTube. This helps people who could not attend. If an event will be recorded, we tell you when you register.

If you do not want to appear in a recording, you can turn off your camera and microphone, or tell us before the event.

Who we share information with

We share information only with people and services that help us run the Disability Dialogue:

  • The Social Deck, who help us run events and this website
  • Webflow, which hosts our website and receives our online forms
  • Campaign Monitor, which sends our emails
  • Humanitix, which handles event registrations
  • Google, which hosts our email and provides Google Analytics
  • Circle, which runs our online community
  • Zoom or Microsoft Teams, which we use to run online events.

These services only use your information to do their job for us.

Some of these services store information outside Australia, for example in the United States. When this happens, we take reasonable steps to make sure your information is protected to the same standard as in Australia.

We may also share information if the law says we must.

Videos and content from other websites

Some pages show videos from YouTube or content from other websites. When you watch these, the other website may collect information about you, just as if you had visited that website yourself.

Keeping your information safe

We keep your information in secure systems. Only people who need it for their work can see it.

We keep mailing list and event information for as long as the Disability Dialogue project runs, unless you ask us to delete it sooner. When we no longer need your information, we delete it.

Seeing or changing your information

You can ask us:

  • what information we hold about you
  • to correct information that is wrong
  • to delete your information.

Email us at [email protected]. We will reply within 30 days.

Making a complaint

If you are unhappy with how we handled your information, please email us first at [email protected]. We will look into it and reply within 30 days.

If you are still not happy, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner:
